Students will be continuing the ‘Whodunnit’? Unit with an emphasis on using a range of techniques and devices that build suspense in their writing. Students will also work through clues to solve an alleged crime in the school. Students will write their own suspenseful text after studying and analysing stories from a range of authors. Students will also submit a prediction and justification of who they believe was involved in the fictional crime event at school.

In Term 3, Year 7 HASS students will begin their Civics and Citizenship unit. Students will be learning about Democracy, the Australian Constitution, as well as the Separation of Powers. There will be 3 small common assessment tasks given during weeks 3, 4 and 5. The first is on “Australia’s System of Government”. The second is about “Australian Society and Values” and the final one is “Investigating Referendums and Plebiscites”. In Year 7 HASS we are looking at another strand of our curriculum area; Economics and Business. Our studies will cover economic opportunities, the world of business and the workplace. In Week 7 there will be a small Common Assessment Task (CAT) on cost/benefit analysis. In week 10 the major CAT will be setting a SMART goal.

Year 7 students are starting a unit that explores Algebra and Linear Relationships.  They will use algebraic language and solve equations.  Students will graph relationships on a Cartesian Plane.  There will be an assessment task in week 6.  Year 7 students will be learning about statistics.  They will be planning and conducting surveys, and using different methods to display and interpret their data.  There will be an assessment task in class in Week 10.

In term 3, students will complete their unit on Earth & Space for the first couple of weeks with an end of unit assessment. Then they will move into our Biological Sciences unit on Classification and Food Systems with the assessment at the end of the term around week 9. Students in Year 7 Science will use models, including food webs, to represent matter and energy flow in ecosystems and predict the impact of changing abiotic and biotic factors on populations. There will be an assessment in Week 9.

In PE lessons students will complete their second round of fitness testing for 2025. Students will also participate in a dance & rhythm and badminton unit. 

In Health, students will begin their unit on puberty, relationships and identity, learning about the changes their body experiences, contraception, conception, reproductive organs and relationships.

Students in Year 7 Health are learning about the risks, costs, and effects of smoking and vaping.  In PE, students are learning badminton skills and working through rosters and scoring.  They have also had Lasse Bundgaard visit to work on specialised skills in preparation for Badminton Gala Day.

In Term 3 students will be looking into the digital world and their own digital footprint. They will learn about connecting with others, netiquette, fair use and copyright and have a major assignment at around week 6 which deals with digital dilemmas and how to deal with them. Students are learning about their digital footprint, cyberbullying, netiquette, identity theft, fair use & copyright. This will lead into a major assignment on digital dilemmas in Week 7.

Grade 7 Drama students explore the key elements of drama, including character, movement, costume, plot, and voice. They learn how to apply these elements to develop engaging performances. Working in groups, students collaborate to create original scripts using a narrative arc that must contain a clear beginning, middle, and end. Through this process, students build teamwork skills and gain experience in performing for an audience of their peers. During the first five weeks of Term 3, Year 7 students will be learning about the different art elements by completing a series of different artworks exploring these new concepts. In the coming weeks students will finish up their initial experimentation with the art elements and move onto their first major project. For their first major project students will need to use all the art elements to construct a bright and vibrant portrait.
Japanese

Term 3 will be the start of Japanese this year for the second half of our cohort. They will learn how to recognise and use hiragana, as well as start to recognise some kanji characters in a variety of interactive ways. These new characters will be used to produce a map of major Japanese cities and be accompanied by pictures representing parts of the culture. Students are continuing to build their recognition and use of hiragana characters. Students will create a map of ten major cities in Japan using hiragana characters and add culturally appropriate images to accompany it.

Year 8 English is starting this term with an ‘Advertising Unit’ where students will analyse a range of advertisements for their techniques and effectiveness.

For the remainder of term 3 students will be investigating informative texts. They will look at a variety of examples and their assessment will focus on their recognition of specific aspects and explanation of their understanding from a set informative piece.

In Year 8 HASS, students will begin their Civics and Citizenship unit. This unit will cover Australia’s voting system, the role of Australian political parties, and how our laws are made.

In year 8 HASS we will be moving onto our next HASS strand of Economics and Business. We’ll look at how markets influence the production of goods and services. Then we’ll move on to how businesses adapt to changes in the labour market. Finally, we’ll study how government influences the economy through the federal budget. There will be two CAT tasks, a minor one in Week 8 then a larger one in Week 9 that gets students to use a range of HASS skills such as analysing sources and forming inquiry questions.

In Year 8 Mathematics, students will be building on their Algebra skills and exploring relationships between patterns, rules, tables and graphs. They will expand and factorise algebraic expressions.  There will be an assessment task in Week 6.

Students in Year 8 Maths will continue to learn about graphing linear relationships on the Cartesian plane as well as how to apply algebraic properties to create, expand, factorise and rearrange linear expressions. Students will then conduct statistical investigations to describe, compare and analyse the distribution of data.

In Year 8 Science students will complete their Chemistry unit with an assessment before moving into Earth Sciences for the rest of the term, which will also end in an assessment around week 10.

Students in Year 8 Science will investigate tectonic activity including the formation of geological features at divergent, convergent and transform plate boundaries and describe the scientific evidence for the theory of plate tectonics. Students will sit a Geology test in Week 10.

In Health, students will begin a unit on Alcohol and Cannabis where they will discover the long and short term effects of these drugs, as well as the laws and statistics surrounding these substances. 

Students in Year 8 Health are learning about the risks, and effects of alcohol, tobacco and cannabis use.  In PE, students are learning badminton skills and working through rosters and scoring.  They have also had Lasse Bundgaard visit to work on specialised skills in preparation for Badminton Gala Day. After this work they will develop their skills in all athletic events in preparation for our school carnival.

A new semester and a new start for the Grade 8s as we begin using a design brief and learn about the design process.

Fun times at the beach is our catch phrase for this project. Students are to choose between either a beach change hut, or a boat. Both of these projects will be turned into small shelving units to display nick-nacks.

The students will be marked on the correct use of tools, the processes of the job, and the overall finish of the project.

In Visual Art, Year 8 students will be learning to convey emotions through their artworks. They are starting by drawing emotions then exploring colour and emotions before planning a ceramic mask based on their learning.

Students are well underway in making their ceramic masks based on emotions and feelings. Once completed, we will have some time to work on personal projects while waiting for the clay to dry and be bisque fired.

In Term 3, Year 8 Multimedia students will begin by learning to handle DSLR cameras with confidence, focusing on both safe operation and effective technique. From there, the journey expands into exploring various photography styles and understanding the creative and technical foundations behind each one. Throughout the term, students will tackle a range of engaging tasks, starting with their first challenge: mastering photographic composition.

During weeks 6-10, Year 8 Multimedia students are exploring the work of artist Charwei Tsai and creating their own artworks inspired by her style. They’ve chosen meaningful lyrics to display on objects like candles or tote bags, then photographed them using composition techniques learned earlier in the Term.

In Term 3, we will continue to combine our English lessons and work together in collaborative groups which focus on giving us the skills we need to succeed. This term, we are reading, watching, and performing scenes from Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. We will practice our speaking, reading and fluency skills by recording ourselves reading aloud. We will get creative by adapting key scenes. We work with a film adaptation of the play throughout the term (the 1996 Baz Luhrmann version).

We are continuing to read, watch and perform Romeo and Juliet, and will complete a written assessment task where we unpack the ways this story is relevant today.

This term, we are learning about the making and transforming of Australia as a nation. Firstly, we will look at significant events in Australian History in the 19th and early 20th Centuries. We will each produce a poster about one event leading to a ‘gallery walk’ so we can learn about all topics from each other.  We will also learn about what life was like for Indigenous Australians prior to European contact. Our work will be about contested histories in relation to Terra Nullius. All tasks are available for students and families to view on Canvas. We are watching and responding to The Secret River, with an emphasis on understanding different points of view about Aboriginal Australians, and what informed the varied views.  Our assessment task will take place during class time and will focus on unpacking two particular characters and their opinions.  It is important that students catch up on any missed work due to absence. Parents can see student grades and work any time through Canvas.

This term in Maths, students are learning about Measurement. Students apply formulas to solve problems involving the surface area and volume of right prisms and cylinders. This will be assessed with an in-class assignment and test during week 4 and 5. Students will be working on indices and scientific notation until the end of Term. There will be a test towards the end of Week 9, early week 10.

All Year 9 classes will be completing a unit of work on Chemistry, investigating acids and bases and different types of chemical reactions. Students will be learning how to write chemical formulae and balance chemical equations. Assessment tasks will include a mid-unit assignment during week 3 and an end of unit test during week 5.

Classes will then complete a unit of work on Physics that includes understanding how energy is transferred by waves. Students will investigate how sound waves travel, as well as the waves that form the electromagnetic spectrum. There will be assessments in Week 10.

This term we will be exploring Mary Shelley’s classic horror story, Frankenstein, through a graphic novel adaptation. We focus on reading and discussing in small groups, and delve into some of the social and historical questions posed by the novel. Our assessments this term will focus on refining our analytical writing and critical thinking skills through close reading and interpretation.

We are continuing to read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, looking at the way she presents ideas about science and nature using this gothic horror story. Following our second assessment, we will watch and evaluate a film adaptation of the novel.

We have finished up our major study of World War 2 and are now moving into our Building Modern Australia unit. Topics will include migration, the Cold War and Civil Rights for Australia’s First Peoples. Our first CAT task will be to look at either Vincent Lingiari, Eddie Mabo or Charles Perkins, and pick either a presentation, essay or report to describe their contribution to improved First Peoples rights. We continue our study of ‘Building Modern Australia’ by studying the topics of Women’s Rights, the Vietnam War, and Asylum Seekers and Refugees. Our assessment task will take place in class towards the end of Term and will be a photo essay about offshore detention.  It is important that students catch up on any missed work due to absence. Students at the start of Term 3 will be using mathematical modelling to solve problems involving growth and decay in financial and other applied situations using exponential functions to solve problems. This will be covered by an in-class assignment and test during weeks 4 and 5. Students will be broken into three groups for the next three to four weeks while working on quadratics. The groups are determined on what support students need. There will be an in-class assignment towards the end of Term.

Year 10 students have been learning about Partying Safely. They will understand different categories of drugs, the effects of consuming drugs and alcohol, the steps to take to plan a safe party, safer drinking strategies and how to help a mate who might have had too much to drink.

This term students will be investigating the environmental issues being created by humans around the globe, specifically in our oceans. Students will also be practicing survival skills, focussing on fires and food preparation. Mathematics Extended students at the start of Term 3 will be solving Quadratic equations and sketching Quadratic Graphs. There will be an assessment task on Quadratics Graphs in Week 4. Advanced Mathematics students will be working on Calculus, in particular the notion of limits, differentiation from first principles and application of differentiation. There will be assessment on this during Week 3 and further assessments in Week 6.

Advanced Maths are working on Circular Functions until Week 8 until they will have an assignment and then a test. With the last two weeks of Term, they will prepare for and sit an exam based on this years’ content.

Maths Extended are arithmetic and geometric progressions and will have an assignment and test towards the end of Term.

New semester and new ideas! We have just finished our latest project “WAVE”, and we are going back to basics with a wooden puzzle. This is a start to finish project, so students draw up the project, then cutout and finish.

Puzzled? Wooden Knot Burr Puzzle! Students are to draw (accurately) the puzzle, containing all the information on how to cut it out.

Students are then given a timber blank for them to mark and cut out.

Accuracy is the key as the project doesn’t work unless it is marked and cut out correctly.

In Term 3, Year 9/10 students are exploring personal connections to place. They will have mini lessons exploring Fauvism painting techniques and 3D building structures, before picking a major topic to explore in more depth.

Students have completed two mini projects based on the art movement Fauvism and experimented with constructing a relief house from the Devonport area. They are now moving onto researching and planning ready to create their own artworks based upon their learnings.

This term students will continue learning about the real world of finance. They will investigate the difference between simple and compound interest and how interest on loans is applied. They will use spreadsheets to learn about budgeting, depreciation and interest that can be earned. Students will be completing a unit on data and statistics. They will be completing tasks related to finding the measures of centre and spread, analysing data from surveys and other statistics. They will learn how to represent data using different types of graphs and charts and use this information to help explain their understanding of this data.

General Maths Level 2

Our students are delving into the real world of finance. During this period, they will examine percentages, wages and budgeting, as well as how exchange rates work when travelling to different countries. Plus, everyone's favourite, the difference between simple and compound interest and the real costs involved.

The assessment will test their ability to use these skills and apply them to a real-life scenario.  
Students are working through a unit on measurement. They will recap skills previously learnt in Year 10 and move into more advanced concepts, including ratio, scaling, Pythagoras, Trigonometry and bearings.

Students will continue to engage in casual recreational games and will have the opportunity to support staff at DHS in planning for and coordinating sport and recreational lessons for Year 9 and 10 students. Learning Through Internship Level 2

During the first half of Term 3, students will be completing their Work-Based Learning placements. After each placement day, they are expected to maintain their Logbook. Their Logbook also contains the employer report which the student needs to organise completion of at the end of their placement. Their logbook forms a major work requirement (has to be completed to pass the course).  Mrs Midson will be making contact with employers and students this Term to check how they are progressing. During the first half of Term 3, students completed their Work-Based Learning placements. We will now spend time gathering reports from the employer, sending thank you letters and reflecting on what we learnt – and if the career choice we made is the right one for our future. We will submit our Logbooks that were completed whilst on Work Experience and prepare for our last major task – our Exhibition of Learning. Families will receive an invite to the Exhibition.

Career and Life Planning

In the first half of term, students will be continuing on with a unit of work on “Preparing for Work”. Students will be learning how to write job application letters, how to prepare for job interviews and the role of social media in the process of seeking employment. Students will be assessed on their e-Portfolio.

Students will be learning about how to prepare for a job interview and then apply this knowledge when they undertake a mock interview.
